NEWCASTLE -- A garage fire late Wednesday that was likely caused by an electrical problem in a 1987 Porsche caused an estimated $350,000 damage to a home in Newcastle.
The fire was reported at 11:25 p.m. in the 7700 block of 120th Place Southeast. When firefighters arrived they found all three wood garage doors burned away. Three cars and a classic Harley-Davidson motorcycle were on fire.
The garage and its contents were destroyed; the interior of the home sustained smoke damage and some fire damage.
One firefighter was treated for a minor burn at Overlake Hospital Medical Center before returning to the scene. A total of 29 firefighters from Bellevue and Eastside Fire & Rescue battled the blaze.
The three residents of the home -- a couple and their 14-year-old son -- were awakened by a smoke detector. The 51-year-old father suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated and released at Overlake.
Bellevue Fire Department spokesman Bruce Kroon said the displaced family will stay with friends or relatives.
Kroon said the 1987 Porsche had rolled out of the garage and stopped on the steep driveway. A short time later its gas tank began leaking, the flaming gasoline spilled down the driveway and burned a fire hose being used to fight the fire inside the home. Firefighters had to leave the home until a new hose could be used.
